Richard Vaughn, M.D. is the System Vice President, Center for Clinical Excellence and the Chief Medical Information Officer at SSM Health. Dr. Vaughn is responsible for defining, implementing and optimizing a common platform of care for SSM via the Epic electronic health record (EHR) and for population health analytics and informatics. This includes order sets, reports, documentation tools and advanced clinical decision support used at all SSM facilities. He has designed and led the system clinical governance committees needed to standardize and improve care processes across the organization. Dr. Vaughn leads the Center for Clinical Excellence (CCE), the SSM department responsible for quality, safety, regulatory compliance, clinical informatics, care standardization and business intelligence across the organization. CCE includes clinical analysts and a pharmD responsible for improving patient outcomes by encouraging the use of evidence-based medicine and creating, maintaining and optimizing advanced decision support interventions in the SSM EHR. SSM has now fully implemented EHR at 15 hospital locations in 4 states and over 100 outpatient multispecialty clinic locations. SSM has successfully attested for stage 1 HITECH Meaningful Use indicating a high level of clinical adoption of EHR workflows and has been recognized by HIMSS Analytics as reaching stage 7 at 2 hospitals and stage 6 at all other hospitals where EHR has been implemented. Dr. Vaughn also leads the SSM Clinical Leadership Council which is responsible for decisions on system clinical governance and care standardization focus.
In his 20 years with SSM Health Care, Dr. Vaughn has demonstrated tremendous leadership and passion for clinical informatics and health care quality improvement. He has been instrumental in the strategy, planning, development and implementation of Project Beacon. Dr. Vaughn became the medical director of Project Beacon in 2006, transitioning from a well-established Internal Medical group practice with the SSM St Charles Clinic Medical Group. He helped facilitate the SSM EHR vendor selection process, serves as overall physician EHR champion and leads the development of regional and entity physician champions. He is the chair of the SSM Medical Informatics Committee, the SSM Clinical Leadership Council and several other clinical governance committees.
Prior to joining SSM Health Care, Dr. Vaughn received his MD degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He completed the American Medical Informatics Association 10×10 medical informatics training program and holds a Master of Information Systems degree from the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
